Miles: 68 miles Terrain: HILLY Conditions: Sunny with a STRONG HEAD WIND
I woke up early and did a small watercolor of a group of musicains from the previous day. I mailed it to a friend from home. Everyone slept in, but when they finally got up, we had a nice breakfast. I packed my bags and first rode to the bike shop that my host worked at. I was able to put my bike up on a stand to thoroughly clean and lube the chain. It was pretty mucked up from riding the packed gravel trail. I left the shop at noon for Winthrop. The trip was supposed to be 56 miles. I was turned around at the beginning and wound up back in South Portland (10 miles out of the way). I was back on track until mile 40 where I should have stayed on Rt. 9A, but chose another road that lead to a town I was leading to anyway. The route brought me into a part of Lewsiton that I did not want to be in. At mile 55, I stopped at a car dealership. He gave me directions to Rt. 202 that goes right in to Winthrop. I still had 35 miles to go and 1 1/2 hours of daylight. I called my host, Tammy, to alert her of my status. I decided to ride as far as I could until they could pick me up in the van. I rode until 6:45 and 10 mils from their home. It was cold, windy, and very hilly. I SOOOO appreciated the pick up, especially after I saw what the hills were like ahead of me. We bought a few groceries and headed to their home. There house is on a ountainside that overlooks one of seven lakes in the area. A beautiful location!! I was introduced to Molly (a sophmore) and Eugene (a first grader). My hosts are teachers (art and science) and very active and well known in the community. A hot showere warmed my bones and a hot meal warmed my insides. My room is a huge combination of a studio/bedroom/kitchen above the garage, with a deck that overlooks the lake, WAY down below. can't wait to paint!!!
